Col's Memory TesterTest your ability to memorise and recall words |
Memory Tester FAQWhat is it?Col's Memory Tester is a free and very simple application that you can use to test and improve your memory. It works by analysing how quickly and accurately you can recall words from within a list of randomly chosen nouns. Col's Memory Tester works on Microsoft Windows operating systems only. Where is the latest version?
Download v1.0 here (41k)This .zip archive contains a Windows executable (exe) file plus a data file called words.txt. To install, simply unzip both files to the same directory and run the executable file, "Memory.exe". How does it work? The application is very simple. Firstly, you select the number of words to memorise, the number of seconds you are allowed per word, and the vocabulary difficulty. Secondly, you hit 'begin', and a 5 second countdown timer tells you to get ready. Then you see the number of words you selected, in a fixed order. Afterwards, you get a further 5 seconds to prepare, and then you have to type back in the words in the order specified. At the end, you are given statistics about your performance, including timing information. The most important number is probably the average thinking time, which is displayed at the bottom. This gives the average time you spent thinking before you first began typing in each answer. This allows you to factor out the time it took you to type in the answers. The typing time, per character, is also shown here. How do I improve my memory? The best way to improve anything in your body, eithr mentally or physically, is to use it more often. Your memory gets better when you continually use and test it at or beyond its limits. Col's Memory Tester can be used to do just that. It is also important to use your brain in the most effective way possible. When memorising a list of words, mst people perform considerably better when they build a mental story involving those words, perhaps by linking them to places that you know well, or maybe even your favourite films, people or activities. For example, when you're remembering the words "house", "balloon", "baby", "sun", you might imagine yourself walking into your HOUSE, seeing a BALLOON in the hallway, and watching it drift into the kitchen whereaa BABY picks it up, and points to the SUN outside. Is this like the Brain Training software that I've seen? Yes, this is another form of brain training software. Of course, it's not as polished as the others, but then again it's free. And who knows, I might improve it. Can I send in feedback? Certainly, though I can't guarantee I'll include your ideas. I'm considering writing a more comprehensive suite of memory-training products, so watch this space. Email me at the usual address (see below). |
